Onimusha Way of the Sword Weapons: Every Oni Weapon

Quick answer

Four Oni weapons have been shown so far, and each one is a distinct special move unlocked by the blue soul meter rather than a separate sword you equip. The twin blades deliver rapid slashes and return a portion of damage as health, the wind blade controls crowds and deflects projectiles, the earth shakers and the sledgehammer both shred enemy stamina to set up break Issen.

It is worth being clear about what "weapons" means here, because the term is misleading if you expect a weapon-swap system. Musashi fights with his sword. The Oni weapons are special moves that the Oni Gauntlet grants once its blue meter fills, and each is a short-lived, powerful effect rather than an equipment slot.

Four have been shown publicly, and previews explicitly describe them as having different functions. Picking the right one for the situation is most of the skill involved.

How Oni weapons unlock

Attacking enemies fills a blue meter at the bottom of the screen. Previews describe the fill rate as slow, which means you will typically get one activation per significant encounter rather than a constant stream.

Once the meter is full you can activate an Oni weapon, and the weapon stays available until you use it. Consecutive parries generate additional blue souls, so defensive play reaches activation faster than aggressive trading.

Demo-tested

The blue meter and all four weapons below were shown in hands-on previews and are reachable in the playable demo. Whether the retail game includes additional Oni weapons has not been confirmed.

Twin blades

The twin blades are the ones previews highlight as most useful, and the reason is sustain. Two blades appear and Musashi performs a rapid series of slashing attacks, hitting far faster than his normal sword.

The important property is the health return. Once the attack sequence finishes, a portion of the damage you dealt comes back to you as health. In a game where healing is scarce, that makes the twin blades the defensive pick — the weapon you activate when you are losing a fight rather than winning one.

Previews also note the twin blades can generate yellow souls, the colour that restores health. If the fight is going badly, this is the weapon that turns it around.

Wind blade

The wind blade is a double-edged pole weapon that Musashi spins, generating a whirling cutting wind around him. It covers a wide area and pushes enemies back while dealing heavy damage, which makes it the crowd-control pick.

Its defensive properties are easy to miss. The spinning wind blocks incoming projectiles, so it functions as an area denial tool against ranged attackers. It can also absorb nearby fire, adding a fire effect to Musashi's attacks and burning downed enemies.

If you are surrounded, this is the weapon. If a boss has adds, this is also the weapon.

Earth shakers

The earth shakers are a pair of heavy, maraca-like implements. Musashi draws them and slams both hands into the ground, producing a shockwave that deals massive stamina damage rather than raw health damage.

That distinction is the point. Stamina damage breaks enemies quickly, and a broken enemy is one you can finish with break Issen. Against slow, heavily armoured enemies that shrug off normal attacks, the earth shakers are the fastest way to create an opening.

Think of this as the setup weapon: it does not kill things, it makes things killable.

Sledgehammer

The sledgehammer is the heavier melee option in the set, described as more powerful than the standard fare and specialised in the same job as the earth shakers — draining enemy stamina fast enough to force a break state.

Where it differs is range and commitment. The earth shakers trade immediate area impact for stamina damage, while the sledgehammer is a direct heavy option against a single large target. Previews specifically frame the stamina-break weapons as the natural pairing with break Issen.

The bow

The bow is not an Oni weapon, but it belongs in any discussion of your offensive tools because at least one confirmed boss encounter requires it. That fight involves clay nodes the boss creates, and shooting them stuns the boss and disables one of its abilities.

Previews describe the timing as abrupt — the nodes appear and you have to switch to ranged fire quickly. Players who ignore the bow entirely will find certain encounters much harder than they need to be.

Choosing the right weapon

SituationWeaponWhy
Low healthTwin bladesReturns damage as health, generates yellow souls
SurroundedWind bladeCrowd control, knockback, blocks projectiles
Slow armoured enemyEarth shakersMassive stamina damage, forces a break
Single large targetSledgehammerHeavy stamina drain, sets up break Issen
Boss with weak pointsBowShoots nodes to stun and disable abilities

The habit worth building is checking the situation before spending the meter. Players who always activate the twin blades will survive longer but clear slower; players who always activate the earth shakers will break enemies but have no answer to being low on health.

What is still unconfirmed

Unconfirmed

Whether the retail game adds Oni weapons beyond these four has not been confirmed. No official names, damage values, meter costs or duration figures have been published for any of them, so the names used here are descriptive rather than official.

Sources and confidence

All four weapons, their functions and the blue meter were demonstrated in hands-on previews and the playable demo. The bow's role against clay nodes was described in preview coverage of a boss fight. No numeric values are official, so none are stated.
