Casting Musashi is the single most consequential decision Capcom made about this game, and it tells you a lot about what the game wants to be. This is not the established master of the later legends. It is a young swordsman still wandering, still looking for the thing he is supposed to be, and then handed something he did not want and cannot refuse.

The historical Musashi

Miyamoto Musashi is a real historical figure: a swordsman, writer and ronin who lived from the late 16th into the mid-17th century and is still the most famous name in Japanese swordsmanship. He wrote The Book of Five Rings, fought a celebrated duel against Sasaki Kojiro, and became a legend in his own lifetime.

Games have used him before, usually as an established master. What this game does differently is the timing. Coverage consistently places this Musashi in his wandering period — the stretch of his life before the duels and the reputation, when he was travelling and looking for a path.

That is a meaningful framing for an action game. A Musashi who has not yet become the legend has room to be changed by what happens to him, which is exactly what the plot requires.

The Toshiro Mifune likeness

The most discussed production detail is whose face this is. Musashi's appearance is modelled on the late actor Toshiro Mifune, who played the masterless samurai in Rashomon, Yojimbo and Sanjuro and became the international face of the Japanese period film.

Reports say the development team spent roughly two years obtaining the rights to use Mifune's likeness. That is an unusually long clearance process, and it signals how central the casting is to the game's identity rather than being a cosmetic choice.

Community-reported

The Mifune likeness and the roughly two-year rights process come from pre-release coverage rather than a Capcom statement in the materials available to us. Capcom's own announcements confirm the protagonist's identity without detailing the likeness agreement.

How he gets the Oni Gauntlet

The inciting incident is a defeat. Musashi is beaten by a Genma, and in the aftermath he receives the Oni Gauntlet — referred to in coverage as the Oni dragon hand or demon dragon hand. It restores him and gives him the ability to absorb souls and wield Oni weapons.

This is the classic Onimusha bargain in a new form: the thing that saves you is also the thing that marks you. The Oni Gauntlet page covers the mechanics, and the important narrative point is that Musashi is not a chosen hero who asked for this. He lost, and the loss changed him.

He is also not the only one. Previews indicate that Takuan Soho and the poet Ono-o both have an Oni dragon hand, which is covered on the characters page. Whatever the Gauntlet is, it is not unique to the protagonist.

What this means for the plot

The game has been described in pre-release coverage as a fresh start for the story that still respects the series' traditional combat. There is no direct plot connection to earlier Onimusha games, which means you do not need to have played them.

Where Musashi ends up is Kyoto in the early Edo period, a city that has been swallowed by miasma and overrun by Genma. He arrives as an outsider during his wandering years, gets pulled into a fight that is not his, and acquires a hand that binds him to it.

The specific story objective shown in previews is worth mentioning because it sets the tone. In one town, the Genma have been making bargains with residents, taking body parts in exchange for fixing their problems. Musashi's goal is to find the Genma collecting those parts and kill it. That is covered in more detail on the story page.

How he plays

Musashi's moveset is built around reading opponents rather than overwhelming them. He fights with both a fast one-handed stance and a heavier two-handed stance, answers attacks with parry or deflect, and counters with Issen at the moment a blow is about to land.

He is also more mobile than the series' previous protagonists in at least one respect: the Oni abilities include a wall run, though it only works on specific surfaces. Oni vision and Oni power round out the set, and all three arrive through story progression rather than grinding.

The finishers deserve a mention because they define the character's presentation. Dismemberment is a full system, with attacks able to cut through a torso or split an enemy in half. Capcom has not softened it, and the intent appears to be that Musashi is not a sanitised hero.

What is still unconfirmed

Unconfirmed

A full voice cast for Musashi has not been officially published in the materials available to us. The exact depiction of Mifune's likeness in the finished build, and whether the two-year rights figure is precisely accurate, rests on pre-release reporting rather than a Capcom statement.

Sources and confidence

Musashi's identity as the protagonist is confirmed by Capcom's own materials. The wandering-years framing, the Mifune likeness and the Gauntlet origin come from pre-release coverage and hands-on previews.
